Sandbox: Free Reseller Accounts for Designers and Developers
Thoughts and business opportunities in partnership with design agencies
This page is a total work in progress. It's a collection of thoughts about how we can work together with design companies for the best of both parties. We already try to help out designers wherever we can (through a designer list, passing on design work, and our forums, for instance) but we think this might be a way to take that relationship further.
We make almost all of our money from ongoing hosting subscriptions, and the majority of designers we host make money primarily from design. However, that design is done on our servers and then often hosted within a reseller account afterwards.
The basic premise of our sandbox concept is that we provide your business with hosting/reseller space for free, allowing you to experiment and design clients sites in development mode, before moving those clients to be direct customers of Vidahost once the site is launched (with you receiving commission).
It's probably best to start out with the key principles of how we see this working:
- You can host your own website free of charge.
- You can host a specific amount of test cPanel accounts (25, for example)
- ...these are in development
- Once these sites are launched, you let us and the client know and the client becomes a direct client of ours
- We bill the client for the hosting and seamlessly move the hosting to our direct control
- We of course pay affiliate commission (a one time 25% of the sign up amount) as standard
Some additional principles:
- We still want the designer to be the design agency responsible for the site - we just want to look after the hosting as that's what we do.
- We (Vidahost) need to have some checks in place before we can allow this. A design company who consistently have 20 sites in development but never launch any will of course not work. It is also unlikely that we will be able to offer this service to anything other than established businesses, rather than start ups.
If the ideas on this page interest you, then please contact us. Until we have a few dozen customers on this model, it is unlikely that we will have hard fast set packages or guidance on this and are completely open to suggestions.
Essentially we are a small business and thrive on relationships with other small/medium businesses - this seems an excellent way to boost those relationships.
